Take the Back Road, Expand Your Horizon

That fisherman in the background just WISHES he was in on this bomber.

Oftentimes it is the back road taking us where we need to go…

The Marzen, by Backroads Brewing Company out of Nelson, BC.  So here’s my mea culpa, I’m on the record as saying that I don’t love lagers.  I know, I KNOW.  There’s an entire spectrum to lagers, of which the Marzen is but one.  I’m ALSO on the record as saying I’m an idiot (or at least, now it’s on the record) and that my palate could use some work.  Never was this made more apparent than a couple weeks back, when I sat in on some beer judging for the 2018 BC Beer Awards.

My point is, obviously you don’t have to love every style of beer cooling in the cave.  But if you’re going to talk or write about beer you should have a basic understanding of how the beer came into being and what makes it tick.  And so this is what I have to say on the subject: this is a great beer, just don’t take my word for it.  The damned thing won Gold at the aforementioned BC Beer Awards in 2017.  Nice work, Backroads.  Nelson represent!  So to come full circle, this weekend I took the back road to where I needed to go.  It led me to Marzen and an understanding that, as a lover of beer I need to expand my horizon.  And so I shall…
